You're writing the story. If somebody gives you an idea that doesn't mesh with the story you're telling, then set the idea aside and use it in a different story.
If somebody tells you that you're writing characters out-of-character, then you should listen. If somebody tells you to add to the story something that they want to see but you think would wreck your story, then you should ignore it. Granted, this isn't at either of those extremes, but the principle is still sound.
