You're finally catching up to Canada...
When the equivalent situation happened up here (without the civil unrest, thank God) and the conservatives split, the big question on everybody's mind on your side of the border was "Bush or Dukakis?"
And then when Unite the Right finally succeeded in putting the party back together without the cult of personality, the big question on everybody's mind on your side of the border was "Bush Jr. or Gore?"
So, yeah, expect some splintering of parties for a decade or two, and don't assume the party that comes out of the process will have the same name as the party that went into it.
This is a normal and healthy part of the political process.
