I halfassed and/or fiat-called every thing but trhe most basic combat mechanics and flat out told them that a different DM would probably be more strict about things, but they all had fun,

Are you sure you're not a pro DM?  I'm pretty sure most of the good ones do this, especially after they're a few hours in to a session.
