This is a good point. Mr. Batzulger and Ms. Castle are rather specifically drawing on a lot of older TV shows and movies, some of which are quite obscure - and it appears they're doing it on purpose. I've actually been wondering about that, and it amuses me to have confirmation that this is a deliberate campaign.
Mr. Hutchins and his collaborators sometimes do the same. But they still mostly focus on contemporary popular entertainment material, and they're not specifically trying to bring in characters and settings that their readers would be hard-pressed to name.
