All of that depends on the red line being credible. There are two types of credibility: willingness to enforce red lines, and ability to enforce red lines. India or China could not join NATO, because no one realty believes that the US and France will risk nuclear war to protect them. I’m doubting the other part: Russia may not have the military capacity to enforce its red lines. It probably does, but a 20% chance to the contrary is odds a lot of people would take. Mutually likely destruction is quite a different game than mutually assured destruction, mainly because politicians are bad at statistics.
