Nah, he was definitely not an Italian, but he was possibly Italic. He was a Roman citizen, equestrian class, and with our best guess from the name, probably an ethnic Samnite (which is in Italia but is not a Latin area). There's very very little information on Pilate's personal life. I'd rate the original concept as true because "white" as a concept didn't really exist then -- but you get lots of accounts of bigotry against Judeans, Assyrians, Edomites, Persians, Egyptians, Samaritans, and all sorts of folks that today we'd lump into one ethnic group.
