There's at least a couple other magical girl works that I've at least heard of that (however loosely) work along those lines (Mermaid Melody Pitchi Pitchi Pitch! and Senki Zesshou Symphogear), so there's that at least...
(And now I can't help but imagine what a crossover between those series might be like. I do know it'll involve a LOT of literally ass-kicking music, that's for sure!)
