Dogs were around first anyway -- by an order of magnitude according to the last numbers I remember seeing, and with the hypothesis advanced that domesticating dogs was what let humans protect a field full of food from critters that would want to eat it, making agriculture viable. From there small cats wandered in on their own following the smaller pests dogs weeren't good at catching, and domesticated the humans to serve them
