$18.75/hr works out to about $36k/yr - a respectable wage for a bachelor living alone today, and not worrying about income tax (highest tax bracket in the 1840's was less than 5% It can be basically ignored as a factor here.)

For a man trying to support a Weasley-size family (wife and six kids)? No. Frelling. Way.

But that's not even a correct conversion. The OP has made some significant math errors.

15 shillings, in 1840, works out to about 95 pounds in today's money -- call it $120/wk for us USA'ians.
That's less than half of the $7.50 "minimum wage".
