Decidedly non-canon backstory silliness:

"Why is every door in the common room open?"

Fred and George Weasley looked at their Head of House. "The muggles have a saying, Professor McGonagall."

"Only a witch cat can close a door."

"The thing is, we aren't cats."

"But it's well known that you are."

"At least some of the time."

"So we left them for you."

That was when she realized that the twins were going to be trouble.
