ANOTHER EDIT: "Ah, I see the source of the misunderstanding now." It's fortunate that I'd made the personal note I was trying to put here, behind spoiler tags, a reply to the original letter, because my real problem was that I'd failed to close the earlier spoiler tags. As you'll see at the link, that wasn't the only thing I'd missed.
