Without damn convincing evidence "The US government is running a covert war with aliens" gets snowed under with a million insane conspiracy theories. "I'm awake, mum." is a much harder message to stop leaking and has a much smaller burden of proof. Their families know where they are and any attempt to hide the message would only piss the sleepers, their families and the Japanese government off.
