The implication being that there is an appropriate amount of oppression required to keep things together, which varies depending on the stresses the system is expected to undergoe

Too much oppresion and the threads strip, the bolt snaps, or the system becomes too ridgid and uncompliant and finds another way to break - and everything falls apart.
Too little oppression and things work loose over time and just fall apart

People need to be just the right amount of screwed.
