Rob, what are you looking at in term of personality for your demon assistant? I can try going over the devils I know, just to see if something matches.

I'm looking for somebody who usually lets the assigned person work out his own problems, but is helpful in cases where the self-insert honestly cannot solve the problem on his own. Xellos from Slayers is close, but doesn't have the "helpful in cases where the self-insert honestly cannot solve the problem on his own" part.

Kurama / Shuichi Minamino from YuYu Hakusho? Bright, his personality fits with what you already wrote, tends to be the aloof member in the back, but doesn't have an issue helping with problems?
(Also, having a plant controller close might help in case of property damage)
