So... three days later, we met up with Medge, Larry and Laura again, this time at Coney Island, NY. I will admit, all my life I've lived within 100 miles of Coney Island -- the last forty years within 38 miles of it -- but I've never been there before. I've been to Palisades Park (yeah, the one from the song), just a year or two before it closed, and a park I don't think anyone is likely to have heard of but which was really big in its day, Olympic Park in Irvington NJ, but never Coney Island. We had great traffic and got there in like an hour and ten minutes (and got home even faster); if that's typical for a Saturday, it won't be the last time. So, once we were there, we had lunch at the original Nathan's, we rode the Wonder Wheel (a ferris wheel where some of the cars move around on tracks, sliding from the inside of the wheel to the edge and back), and walked all the way to the Russian/Ukranian/Uzbek neighborhood in Brighton Beach, where we did some shopping and browsing and hanging around in a park. Overall, another fantastic day.
And if the rain holds off as the last weather forecast I heard said it will, we and Medge will be doing Island Beach State Park and Seaside Heights tomorrow. Our summer up to now has been pretty slow, but damn if we're not making the most of the last couiple weeks of it.
