I tend to like spellings without the macron (o, u, etc.), because it's actually spelled "ou" or "uu" in a moraically timed language like Japanese.

Only if you use the Hepburn romanization method (which, I'll grant, is very popular, but not the only way to do it). Moraically timed languages rarely use the latin alphabet at all.
