I wonder about something. I've only seen the plot concept of a villian doing what he/she/it does in order to spark opposition from a worthy hero once before, in the movie Unbreakable. Is this something that's popped up in other stories that I haven't read?

Not that I know of. Again, like other elements of the story, this particular twist predates Unbreakable; in fact, I remember commenting on the similarities to Peggy after we saw the movie, and worrying about this very question. Like I said about the resemblance of Quincy to his 2040 version, it's probably just that the same set of influences converged for me as for M. Night Unspellable.
