I got the strong impression that the novelisation was done so that it matched the film as made, possibly including scenes that only appeared in "Directors Cut" (T2 certainly looked like it happened that way).
I would certainly be curious to know what the original script said, if such a beast exists, as a laser with the power output of a dim light bulb, even if it delivers it all over a microsecond or whatever, is not what most people would expect.

I wonder if there are any conceptual design notes for T1 anywhere around, sort of the written equivalents of artist's sketches and notes for manga? Again, would make interesting reading.
