I can't speak for *nix based systems (been too long since I've really sat down and used one, more's the pity), but getting a list of files in a DOS directory is as easy as opening a command prompt to the directory in question (how to do this varies based on which revision of Windowsyou're dealing with), then typing DIR > List.txt (Or if you want to conserver space, DIR /W > List.txt). I suspect it's similar on a *nix system (might even be as brain dead as ls > List.txt, but somehow I doubt it)
