Is that a good "oh my" or a bad "oh my"?  (Did I impress or embarrass?)

Catty, the colonists were just a macguffin for the story, along with the irradiated handwavium - it was an excuse to put the character in a situation where she had nothing to do but reflect. If you really need an explanation, well... hmmmmm... Ah, yes: Beta Hydri is a G2 IV star - a subgiant.  (Sol, by comparison, is a G2 V.) Subgiants are noticeably larger than sol-type stars. We (or at least I) don't know what a subgiant's stellar flares are like, so it's not unreasonable to assume they'd be more energetic than a sol-type star's flares. Add in the fact that we have no idea what was going on in the colony (and never will), and we get a situation where Something Went Horribly Wrong...
