I have no counterlogic for the aliens as they're developing above, it all sounds good to me so far. Keep it up, sounds good!
RE Miranda crew - think of the Trek show model - the main cast are the Captain and department heads, so if you give me an engineer, the only reason (s)he won't be Chief Engineer is if you specifically request it, or someone else puts up a more interesting/ealier Chief character.
Departments are arranged along late DS9/Voyager lines with DS9/TNG movie grey jumpsuits with color coded turtlenecks underneath as duty uniforms, Astronomy is a 'civilian' department of its own with uniforms optional (unofficilly, as long as you've got the critical points covered and it's appropriate for your duty station, uniforms are optional everywhere, but these are mainly hardcore Trekkies...) and if they do want to wear one (with a helmet and wavescarf, they're functional pressure suits) they get Scince turtlenecks.
And I agree, squids in sunglasses for the win! Wraparound mirrorshades all the way!

ETA: body specifics, as I first saw them - start with a squid, but plate the body over with a turtle shell. Replace the beak and tentalcles with snout as above, and extend the head/body junction a bit to make room for the limbs to connect at the bottom. Legs are the first and third limb-pairs, and have crab-style exoskeletons, they are relatively short. The middle limb pair arms are much lomger, and have partial heavy shells along the outside so the whole critter can crouch down and have the body and legs well protected, curling the snout in underneath. There's another heavy plate on the top of the head where squid have that thick leathery bit. Each arm ends in half a dozen or so prehensile fingers, relatively tough-skinned and muscular, with stubby ends ala human fingertips. Watching one type is probably fascinating, and possibly a turn-on for some of the less inhibited types among Fen.
- CDSERVO: Loook *deeeeply* into my eyes... Tell me, what do you see?
CROW: (hypnotized) A twisted man who wants to inflict his pain upon others.
For the next 72 hours, Itachi intoned, I will slap you with this trout. - Spying no Jutsu, chapter 3
