"Jupiter Mining Corporation" is slightly a misnomer, but they do a lot of their own ice and gas mining to support their ever-expanding fleet of freighters and transports, with a sideline in selling their overstock to the locals. While he does not particularly claim it as a mantle, Jeph Antilles is considered an 'Independent', as he works hard, doesn't particularly cater to one faction or another unless one has given reason to deserve a lack of business, and as long as you also work hard and keep your nose reasonably clean while under his employ, he'll reward loyalty with like, exemplifying the typical ideal of the Independent Captain Mal. He just doesn't habitually wear a brown coat, which should cause some consternation, but doesn't.
Government: Government is loose, more frontier than most Fenspace, where the only real perceived need for it is to maintain the settlements, and to have a way to deal with the more intense sort of troublemakers. It is incredibly direct as these things go, where if one has a problem with the way things are being handled, one rides into Serenity Valley and talks with someone actually in the government... or one runs for office themselves. Otherwise, unless you take the effort to at least vote, most attempts to complain are usually given a glare of disapproval from those that are involved in some way. Most people tend to be 'let others be, we're all just folk'... except where the predations of the 'Reavers' are concerned.
