[DRAFT][RFC] Artificial Intelligence in Fenspace

#11

More to chew on
== Classifying AIs ==

Notable [[The Wizarding World|Wizard] AI researcher Eleazar Yudkowsky has come up with what is the most commonly used method to distinguish the different levels of AIs.While an acknowledged AI expert, most consider Eleazar Yudkowsky a bit detail-oriented and focused on classifying things to the point of annoyance.

* ''Sprite-class'': Sprite-class AIs cover the range between intelligent tool and Near-human sapience. For example, the AIs in Patrol Watches are Sprite-class.
* ''Ghost-class'': Ghost-class AIs can pass Turing Tests, but don't demonstrate exceptional abilities.
* ''Spirit-class'': Spirit-class AIs have an exceptional skill or ability that lets them stand out. Several of the well known androids and ship-minds fall into this class.
* ''Poltergeist-class'': Poltergeist-class AIs have a combination of exceptional skills and/or abilities that makes them verge on the superhuman. This is where BNF AIs tend to be rated.
* ''Entity-class'': Entity-class AIs are superhuman in capability, able to perform feats of such magnitude that civilisation would tremble. The most common example used for AIs of this class is being able to hard-bootstrap a technological singularity if they felt like it.They don't feel like it today, check back tomorrow. Several of [[The Hacker Underspace] are considered in this class.

One thing that muddies the waters is the status of a few '''Ghost Conversions''', namely [[Wave Convoy] and [[A.C. Peters]. While Wave Convoy would not object to being called an AI ''now'', he recognises his past as a human being. A.C. Peters on the other hand describes herself as a cyborg in the most complete sense, her biological and artificial components equal in influence, and ignores the argument.When she pays attention to the argument, A.C. mockingly calls herself Schrodinger's AI.
With the emergent technology of Mind-Machine interfaces, the possibility of uploading ones consciousness either way makes a vexing situation even more complicated.

Note: This bit is only a placeholder for people to use, if they feel like it. Add to or remove.

== Notable AIs ==

Most AIs don't distinguish between themselves much[[Trigon] notwithstanding, preferring to work up a reputation. That doesn't stop others from doing so.

Edit: put the ref tags back in
