OOC: Short form? Think "skinhead paradise" for the CSA, with a lot of swagger.
The Rebs whooped Yankee ass three times before their World War One analog let a Bitter, Prussian USA win. As the CSA began mechanizing, manumitted slaves went socialist and attempted a Communist revolution that failed HARD, but gave the USA the opening to curbstomp the CSA. This revolution is what Featherston uses as his rationale to attempt a "Final Solution," compared to Hitler's blaming Jews for the Great Depression.
Point of divergence for this timeline is a set of orders wrapped around some cigars. Special Order 191, and thus the source for the name of the timeline. This order was intercepted by the Union Army, OTL because some Confederate officer was an ass to the enlisteds, and they figured that an asshole of that caliber can clean up his own mistakes. In this timeline, they picked up the orders , leading to a resounding Confederate victory and enough momentum to win the war quickly, before the Union's advantage in materiel could become a factor.
First Novel in the chronology is "How Few Remain" set roughly in the 1890s. Then it goes on to the Great War, Depression, and then the WWII Analog.
Turtledove uses a "Tapestry" writing style, so several characters and their descendants weave back and forth throughout history. He picks say five or so RL people who would be important and throws a few others around that are original, "little guy" types.

them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.''
