You'd still be digging out kilometers of rock to make the waterway anything more than a glorified storm drain, though. Either way you're going to have to cut through way more rock (and god only knows what else, like permafrost or aquifers) than might really be worth it. The Hellas-to-Lowell canal has the same problems & might end up being a white elephant, even in the Age of Miracles.
