There's also the fact that if the Star looses control and veers of the track for whatever reason, there's a big chunk of metal in the way rather than wide open space to slow down and get it back under control. Hitting a car at 600kph will end in a fireball of vehicle confetti. I wouldn't think it'd be safe.
Avgas... I just assumed it'd be easier to get in quantity than proper high-octane racing fuel, and substantially cheaper. It's the best octane rating they can get, especially when running at a rich mixture under hot, high-pressure turbocharged conditions. Which is what Avgas was originally for, big supercharged Merlin engines running boost at wide open throttle.
Hmmm. 98 Unleaded at the level of boost they're pushing would be dangerous.
