It would absorb the force of the leading edge if you were looking at the momentum applied on a graph, but it would then smoothly icrease with sustained force... which suddenly, almost all on its own makes a spacefighter that handles like an aircraft possible, if you mount a block of the stuff as a heatsink. Of course, there's already nearly as many ways to do that as there are spacecraft in the sky, but it at least suggests how it's related to the known capabilities of 'waved stuff.
