Jeph, I think we all feel that way, in some way or another. I'll leave the 'we got him' bombast to the people who do that better. I've seen a lot of other people who've had some real shite memories stirred up by seeing that face again. People are congratulating me for finally pulling it off, but it feels hollow somehow, like putting out the fire after the building's burned down. It's done. It's over.
As for what should happen to Grey? That's not for me to answer. I don't like the death penalty. It's just a killing to make us feel better - and that's no different from murder. A long life, locked away somewhere far from the warmth of the sun or anywhere safe and comfortable, with nothing but the memory of what he's done for company. His victims have to live with it, why shouldn't he?
The full details of what happened and how will come out on their own. I'll let them.
But there is something else I must say. Something that does need to come out in public.
Shinji Tanaka was the man shot my brother down. I was talking with him right before he died.
Another old Great Justice warrior, who'd been told he had to take on a secret mission, for the benefit of Fenspace. Everything to him looked legitimate. Lawful orders, from a lawful authority, to take on a CODEWORD classified mission. I've done it a hundred times myself, acting with the trust the the person issuing the orders hasn't been turned. Or on personal trust.
With those orders in hand, he shot my brother down, thinking he was splashing a Boskone agent, who they could debrief while the Boskone thought they were dead.
But the fighter crashed harder than they intended, and he found out who he had shot down.
His accomplice, who took the actual shot, was taken by Grey and 'chipped' to demonstrate the price of failure to him and his handler. Denon Broadin didn't deserve to die like that.
I found him, not knowing any of this. I nearly killed him. Luckily I didn't. He told me the above, and gave me the evidence we needed to get the ball rolling. He'd logged every communication by taking screenshots of his orders with a cameraphone.
And we both realised, if he was arrested, it'd tip off his handler, and her handlers. If he just disappeared, they'd have to suspect he'd been taken. Either way, they'd turtle up, burn loose ends and go cold. We'd loose the real conspiracy. We both knew what that meant, it didn't need to be said
Shinji Tanaka shot himself to give us this chance.
His last request to me was that I let people know he wasn't a traitor.
It's the least I could do for the person who gave his life to make this possible.

META: Since everyone else was getting in with a response. Needed to do something. One person made this all possible and they were the sort of person who sort of gets forgotten in the glare of the Mary Sues. Maybe I shouldn't fall in love with my darlings but I loved that scene a lot. It just had so much weight to it and a pitch change in emotions.
The previous response from TASE was my attempt at handling Cobalt's post IC.... AC's response irked me a bit because it turned the story into something about her being in charge, when it's very much about Jet, the legacy of the Boskone War, and Mackie going through something AC would have a helpful perspective in. I really didn't want to start an argument in thread so tried to deal with it improv style by changing the tone with a followup post instead and work with it, either reframing it as part of a misdirection attempt or what have you .
Ended up irking a few more people instead. Althought the Texas thing was just begging
Anyway. Speak in public. The public will answer.
The next response will be 'Because sure you wouldn't tell us if you had just shot him while he begged for you not to'
