When you pick up a weapon there is a tendency to get tunnel vision in regards to
your combat options. To a certain extent this is useful, it is important that you keep some focus on the weapon; as any weapon that you bring to the party is a
weapon that can be taken and repurposed, reoriented, and if you are lucky to survive, successfully removed from whatever orifice it ends up lodged
in.
Where it is not useful is where you focus on it completely and forget that it is not the weapon that is dangerous, it is the mean motor-scooter
using it that is dangerous. That is assuming that the person in question is in fact a mean motor-scooter and not a skateboard with wobbly wheels. Lo though I
walk through the valley of death I shall fear no evil - or heavenly budgie men; for while I am not the meanest motor scooter in the valley, I am in the upper
percentile.
With the numbers reduced I had more tactical options. The two angels were focused on me, which meant that I did not to have to worry as much
about bystanders. I slid away from attacks, maintaining distance rather than closing. On each step I let my lead leg linger for a few moments. They were
angels, looking to kill a fatted calf has precedence with them. One of them took the bait.
Calves, as any rodeo clown will tell you, can move very, very fast. They are also really bad targets in a swordfight. They are tempting though,
especially if the body is hidden behind a shield. You would think that angels would know better than to fall for temptation. To strike a calf you have to
reduce the length of your range, Picture a right angle triangle where the horizontal and vertical sides are of equal length. Now orient that triangle of the
space between you and your opponent with the diagonal pointing towards the calf and the horizontal oriented on the head. Which line is shorter? Exactly. Who
says math can't save your life.
I stepped back as his flaming sword whistled through the space my calf was a half second before. My own strike was parallel to the ground aimed
at the eye/ear line. Bones crunched and the angel dropped as I dragged the blade free. The second one thrust at my side. My beatdown parry on the left came a
fraction of a second too slow.
