Gamma Emission: Catalysts

One of these days I'm going to learn to keep my mouth shut.
Not in the 'I just forgot to engage my brain-mouth-filter' way, but in the 'don't ingest strange substances' way.

I had gotten so used to the fact that I didn't get sick any more. If I felt a cold coming on I just had to crank up my output. After an hour or two of strenuous exercise, whatever the latest virus or bacteria used it be, its genetic code was now full of so many holes that it made easy pickings for my immune system.

So when it came time to jump in the middle of a five story tall sentient amoeba, I didn't think much about swallowing a bit.

Not that I was trying to emulate Gen. But when I got the air knocked out of my lungs, I couldn't help the instinctual half hearted gasp that drew in a mouthful of that stuff. After finally jumping into clear air, I spat enough of it out to get some actual air into my lungs. But it wasn't like I got a mouth full of sewer water. The stuff didn't taste like anything at all, so it didn't even cross my mind not to swallow.

Repeat this cycle a few times (ok, I should have given Terr and Sachie a bit more of a lead time on multiple occasions), and I ended up ingesting more than the daily recommended amount of Hamidon. I first noticed the effects after we pounded on Hami enough to force him back to wherever he retreats to. My normal aquamarine glow had shifted to something more in the purple range. And instead of an even soft light I was doing a passible impersonation of a strobe light with epilepsy.

The visible effects weren't half as bad as the internal ones. It felt like I had just chased a bottle of red bull with several shots of vodka. My libido was swinging between 'over-eager' and 'warm-and-fuzzy', which left me antsy.

Well antsy and silently sending prayers to whatever deities were watching out for me today, because Net and Sachie had apparently finished their innuendo marathon. Not that I can blame them for being happy (or even come close to understanding how the two of them hooked up), but they were getting a little to free with the details earlier. If Rhea had been along for this adventure I don't think it would have stopped there. There would be questions and notes, and 'ooh I want to try that later' looks. As it was I had a hard enough time keeping my mouth shut and reminding myself that fun and games needed to wait until the job was done.

We beat up Hro'Dtohz, the twisted thing they had made Hero One into, and the portal generators. Not that I expected much to change, I had done it before and I would do it again. It bought us time, and time was what we needed if we wanted to make any progress with the peace negotiations. Those thoughts, and the thanks of Lady Grey, didn't get my full attention. I gave some half hearted congratulations to team as I dragged Terr to the base teleporter in the Vanguard base.

Along the way I sent a text message to Rhea. "Bring toys, snacks, and free time. I'm all wound up and I know exactly where I want to go."

I'm not exactly sure how long it took for Rhea to arrive, but shortly after she did I was sandwiched between the two of them. And quickly after that, their diligent attention combined with whatever else was racing around in my bloodstream to blow my mind. Unfortunately my control decided to join my mind, and was immediately followed by almost every fuse in the apartment.

I didn't realize this as first, my brain was too busy swimming in endorphins to care about much. Terr and Rhea were happy to occupy themselves while I slowly clawed my way back to intelligent thought. I stared at the slightly psychedelic light show that occurred whenever we remember to get under the sheets before starting the fun. Rhea never seemed to forget. She thought the sheets were cool, and would go so far as to draw them over everyones heads to maximize the effect. So it wasn't until several hours later when I stumbled into the bathroom that I discovered my problem.

My glow had returned to normal, mostly, by that point, so I wasn't completely in the dark when I shut the door. But the light not coming on when I flipped the switch was annoying. I took care of business and figured I would replace the bulb sometime later. Whenever I wasn't feeling so tired, or when Terr needed to use the bathroom, whichever came first.

As I was walking back towards the bed I noticed there wasn't any light coming from the hallway. My curiosity tweaked at this. I knew that Rhea wouldn't have bothered to shut it off, not if we had started without her. And I knew that I had left it on in my expedited trip to the bedroom. So I opened the door and stuck my head into the hallway. It was pitch black, aside from the soft glow coming from the doorway I was occupying. No lights from the kitchen or den.

"Huh" I said as I meandered back to bed. "I think the powers out."

Rhea unfolded her legs from around Terr's head and lazily queried "No alerts?"

I opened the lead chest at the foot of the bed, and checked the com strapped to the inside lid for just this purpose. No flashing red lights. "Nope."

Terr emerged from under the sheets and licked his lips. "Then don't worry about it, it will come back on soon enough."

I let the chest close with a *thunk* and crawled back into bed. I'd deal with it later.
