I might have to start all over with the text, and hope I can recreate the happy accident that got this look (which was not what I was aiming for, but much better than what I had in mind).
EDIT:  2 hours later... I need more information about/training in using GIMP.  I'm obviously missing something fundamental.  Why else can't I select something and then move it?  Argh.
