Hm. That raises an interesting question. If the song would kill Doug, what would a backfire do?
More seriously, both ideas are... interesting... but I get more a sense of a bleak miasma rolling off Doug and filling his area of effect, like a black fog, doing minor physical damage and inflicting Emotion Control: Despair (or something else along those lines) on anyone in range.
