More seriously, both ideas are... interesting... but I get more a sense of a bleak miasma rolling off Doug and filling his area of effect, like a black fog,
doing minor physical damage and inflicting Emotion Control: Despair (or something else along those lines) on anyone in range.

hmmm, actually, you could combine that with Shepard's second idea,

provide some sort of cathartic experience which allows him to squeeze the results of months worth of intensive psychotherapy into a few minutes.

So after using the song Doug feels better.
