Not to mention the presence of armed protestors (i.e., policemen) would escalate the whole situation much faster and with much more dire consequences. Kent State was bad, but if the students had been shooting back, it would have been a massacre.

IIRC, one of the points of the Kent State protest was that it was a _Peaceful_ protest.
