It's the Warriors' World versions of Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Jim Steinman with the running competition. Doug is an old friend of Madonna's, dating back to before either of them were famous (it was a welcome relief when, in 1988, he could go to her and say "this is why I never saw one of your shows"), and she throws him prerelease copies of her albums for (among others) the reason that she might get some press out of him using one of her songs.
