Point of Order! Marie works just as well for shortening to Mary, and better fits the Douglas -> Doug shortening as well as better keeping the whole french descent feel

Actually, at that point, Meredith works better than Marie.  Most people don't shorten Marie any further as it's already a short/shortened name.  Also Marie and Mary have the same number of syllables, so you're not really shortening anything, just changing pronunciation.  And "Mary Sue Sangnoir" is much better than "Marie Sue Sangnoir."
