On the GUI end of things, if you do end up upgrading Firefox, I suggest installing this theme.  It makes Firefox look decent, as opposed to the new look.
As for FF.net, these three Greasemonkey scripts help quite a bit, in my opinion.  (I will admit that I had to allow all the scripts too, which is annoying.)
