The anime is based on events till volume 3 and sides stories and volumes 4 and 5. The current count of the volumes in the novel are 9 volumes.
If the anime is light hearted now, it'll probably turn darker if they go to a second season. There's a scene in volume 7 that would be perfect between Saito and Shiro.
