The stuff in italics are flashback bits, and Sasuke wasn't really 'sane' to begin with. It's mainly foreshadowing for something else, there was only one person involved in the break-in, and he just set the Uchiha off really. The priming for that particular trigger was provided by someone else blabbing that Itachi was dead a few hours earlier. Now, ask yourself, who do we know in the cast who both has access to the hospital, access to the Hokage's reports (well, some of them. Just enough in this case), and wouldn't hesitate to just blab it out for her 'Sasuke-kun'?
We all know that Sasuke's 'ambition' is to revive his clan, and to kill 'a certain man'. Is it any wonder that the realization that one of those _rights_ as he sees them in his mind was taken from him in addition to everything else juts broke him?
As for the hows and whys of the break in ... that's in my To Be Resolved file. It'll be explained in the plot arc of the next 'short'. At this time, going into further specifics didn't seem like anything but needless upping of the word count in a story that isn't supposed to center around intrigue, but around a broken person flipping out and killing people in that old ninja way.
