RE: Updates 45 (couldn't think of anything witty)
Chapter 8 of Sith Lord Swell has arrived. That's the one where Luke and his NJO students get dropped back to the immediately pre-Clone War time frame, and since he did technically inherit the title of Sith Lord from Vader immediately after Vader offed Palpatine, they present themselves as a non-Banite Sith order coming forward because the pair running around trying to start a war are making Sith look bad. Between going on a tear against slavers, getting the Tatooine region out of the grasp of the Hutts, and the general lack of distinction between Sith and other flavors of Force users in the galaxy at large, this meets with wild approval from the locals, and Luke is elected the Senator as Tatooine to joins the Republic, under the name Lord Vader. It's chock full of jabs against Mouse Wars along with playing off the prequel cast in various fun ways, and I love it to bits.

It looks like whoever hosts them and Sufficient Velocity had a power outage. The SV page has been giving twitter updates on the situation:

This reports that there was a fire at the data center.

RE: Updates 45 (couldn't think of anything witty)
Sufficient Velocity must use the same data center as they are out too.

Per latest tweets from Sufficient Velocity staff twitter @SVcommand the earliest they hope things to be back up is possibly tomorrow afternoon. Cause of the downing of both Spacebattles and Sufficient Velocity was a catastrophic failure of a Generator which resulted in a fire. Also apparently some of the servers incurred water damage form the sprinkler system being triggered. I'm a bit surprised that the data center had the generators in the same building as the servers instead of having them in a separate structure.

Why wouldn't the emergency generators be as close to the datacentre as possible?

I ask this as an IT professional.

I'm surprised that they had a water based fire suppression system instead of something like halon which wouldn't damage the stuff that hadn't burned yet...

Some more SV news.
Xon on Discord Wrote:I'm waiting for some hardware providers to get back to me on provisioning new hardware requests. once that happens I can get SV back up in probably 5-6 hours of getting the hardware. This will be an interim solution, and we'll have some downtime to migrate to a better solution later, but it beats being down for a potentially unknown number of days.

No solid ETA yet, but I'm not going to wait for the old servers to magically become fixed

Apparently to prevent Hardware loss in the Server Farm.

Remember Firewalling can also mean a Physical Walls to control the Spread of actual Fire.  You have one in your Car.

This discussion should probably be move to General.
RE: Updates 45 (couldn't think of anything witty)
The only places that use clean agent fire suppression are corporate places where data integrity is worth more than the hardware.
For reference, the STARTING requirement is that your data-center is reasonably *air-tight* or it wont work at all.

I've worked for a few hosting providers. Even the place so cheap they were using consumer level cases instead of rack mounts still kept their generators outside to avoid precisely this issue.
Hell, they even fired the generators up once a month for at least an hour just to make sure they were in good working order.  Again, to avoid precisely this exact issue.

Then again, we all laughed ourselves sick when "ThePlanet" exploded because they weren't accounting for battery ventilation and had a hydrogen build up back in `08. They were at least 10 times our size but made what we regarded as a truly amateur level mistake.

Lots of places cut corners, but some places cut stupid corners.

Cutting corners where the failure condition is a rapid unscheduled thermal event is a stupid corner to cut. Some do it anyways.

Folks, I said "as close to the datacentre as possible", not "in the datacentre"...

Generator fire Damaged Server hardware by setting off the buildings previously existing fire suppression system.
Makes me wonder just how cheaply designed the Data center was.
Just for general Safety you put the Generators outside of the building with their own Weather Shell, and FPS.
RE: Updates 45 (couldn't think of anything witty)
I mean, it probably isn't surprising nerd message boards would pick a cheap hosting service that might not have the best practices

But what if they host 4X games instead of FPS? Smile

Seriously, what you're describing here is not my experience. The generators go in the same building, but not in or immediately beside beside the datacentre. (The battery backup that keeps the datacentre running for the two-to-three minutes it takes the generators to come online goes right beside the datacentre.) I've never seen a datacentre facility, corporate or government, that had the generator in a separate building.

The fire from the Generators set off the Old water based sprinkler system. Old enough that the sprinklers were all tied together in stead of separated by rooms. I'm old enough that running an IC Engine Generator inside an enclosed structure would be considered a suffocation hazard, let alone the the tank of fuel to keep it running for at least 3 days.
RE: Updates 45 (couldn't think of anything witty)
Okay, people. Please take the discussion of the datacenter fire to another topic, preferably in General. This is seriously derailing the updates thread.
