Well then... I won't be driving. I'll probably end up taking the train... it's handy enough for where I want to go anyway.
Interesting alright. Isn't there a similar Chinese curse?

As I was telling my roommate, who's never seen white stuff like this before, and paraphrasing what Wire said:
When driving in snow, you can change your speed or you can change your direction; you cannot change both at the same time. Brake and accelerate in straight lines; do not touch the brake or accelerator while turning (except as needed to keep that constant motion going as Wire so aptly pointed out).
Those people you see with tires screaming against the snow and ice as they try to get moving? Yeah. They are Doing It Wrong.

[0] Or maybe they just get really dumb. That should change as the season progresses, but the shock of all this white stuff on the ground has caused too many people to forget their inclement-condition-driving skills for a few weeks.
To (possibly-mis)quote one of Ronnie Barker's comedy routines, "Due to completely unforseen circumstances, winter has arrived this year."

I don't know if folks will remember, but last year at this time we had gone down to West Virginia to celebrate the season with Kat and Joe and many other friends -- and got trapped in our hotel by the blizzard that hit the day we got there.
I am very glad to report that we are back in WV, in the same hotel, and there is no snow at all. Yay.

Hmm, it's like us when it rains - everyone appears to forget how to drive. Instead of snowbanks & ice, we have flooded roads due to blocked drains or small hollows.
That was from earlier this year but probably happened again within the last fortnight.
The rain we've had has postponed a paving project I've planed due to the days of standing water & the greatly risen watertable.

Wire, I think in most cases they were already dumb, the weather and driving conditions just give them the opportunity to really show it off to the world.
Of course, I headed over to the hardware store last night in shorts, t-shirt and sandals (and a light fleece vest) last night, so I may be somewhat hoist to me own petard in that respect. Though it was fun walking past those bundled into heavy coats, hats, gloves, boots, etc.

Rod, is that Melbourne? I always knew you lot were mad down there. Floating Trams.... what will they think of next? Flying boats, upside-down rivers, and Football?
I know up here in Queensland we're pretty well flooded out. I'm walking around in gumboots and my *wet* wet-weather gear and its still raining. Another day or so of rain... hell another hour of heavy rain and roads major roads here locally are going to get cut. The 'never going to be cut' ones.
And you don't want to see the state of the local stores...
Liquid sunshine they call it.
We could do with some of the real stuff.

Yeah, that's Melbourne. As if the tram wasn't as self-explainy as it is. I couldn't find any youtube vids of some of the more infamous inner-Melbourne flood prone locations, nor from the more recent storms. There are some of a major street in the CBD turning into a river.

Same here in Lost Angels... We've all been washed away, its been raining for a week to 10 days right now straight.
Which almost never happens. Weather people say its been 10 years since we last had a storm like this, and rain for weeks on end is why I was glad to move OUT of Northern California.

Rain we can handle.
Though I remember a really big rainstorm back when I was working my INTRA placement 2 years ago or so... where a river just outside the office I worked in went from being a 10cm deep trickle of water, to a raging mudfilled torrent that managed to overtop the bank on the far side. That's a rise of about 2 and a bit meters and then some. We were actually worried it'd flood the new building. Nothing stuck with me more than that deep sibilant hiss it made as it rushed passed at a rate of knots, carrying trees, random debris and a part of a house.
Anyway... speaking of idiots on snow, I had the brilliant pleasure today of watching someone try getting a Toyota up a big long hill by simply nailing the throttle, spinning the wheels and slowly sliding up through sheer force of flinging snow backwards. Right until the engine exploded. Was even funnier when the dozy sod kept trying to start it with the crankshaft in pieces on the road. Weather like this doesn't seem to bring out the morons... it just makes them more obvious.

Yeah. though for all the rain we seem to have dodged a bullet in the burn areas... no mudslides though the newsies had people stationed at them 'just in case'

wow. Well, hopefully some of that will seep into the water table and keep you guys hydrated for a year or two.
For cold weather, I don't tolerate the bitter, wet, and windy conditions too well... unfortunately those are the conditions I most frequently have to deal with. Fortunately, I have an ace up my sleeve. My warm-weather heritage means that I tend to pump out more BTUs than the average guy - in short, I have a more efficient cooling system. This means that in cold weather I can turn it to my advantage and get away with wearing fewer layers, especially if the big five are properly covered (feet, hands, head).
However, the wet, nasty, bitterly cold stuff will still require specialized gear.

My Turn
12-26-2010, 06:08 PM
As I write this, the front edge of a blizzard is about two hours from hitting us.
Thank gods Peg's mom and brother gave us a snowblower for Christmas yesterday... I assembled it when we got back from their place last night and it's sitting in the garage ready to be launched.

It would be annoying to discover after you can't easily get out that you need to get a vital replacement part...

No, I haven't run it. It's an electric, though, and has considerably fewer parts than a gas-powered one. But that's a good idea. After I make breakfast I should plug it in and give it a test run.

The snow is here, I've tested the snow blower, and now we're holed up and waiting. We were supposed to visit my mother today, but the snow hit her first, and if the forecasts are accurate we would have had to drive through the worst of the blizzard to get back home. So we made arrangements to do the visit another day.

You'll have to give us a Consumer Report on that electric snowblower, Bob. As someone who lives in an area where snowblowers are as ubiquitous as lawnmowers, where I'm the only dumb bugger out freezing his mitts off shoveling after every snowfall, I'm feeling the urge to pick one up before next winter.
But *nobody* has an electric one. I don't know if that's due to performance or simply because they're engaged in some sort of dick-waving agenda where if they don't out-roar the guy next door with his ice-munching death tank, they're losing.

It's late, I've been up for far too long, and this seems to be the thread to bitch about weather in, so I shall toss in my few cents.
perhaps I should have expected this, but I have just arrived in NY after 27 hours on standby trying to get into EWR (newark airport).
My appreciation of snow has now been cut down by a few notches.
