All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXII
RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXII
Okay, I just went over to TVT and did a wick check on their page for Shirley Temple, and found nothing pointing to it that looked like the candidate. It looks like it's completely original.

Thanks. Now I feel comfortable about adding an example.

Hmmmmm... Two back-to-back entries from the User Creation log today:

2021-09-30T11:22:10 User account BalonGreyjoy (talk | contribs | block) was created
2021-09-30T11:04:49 User account DagonGreyjoy (talk | contribs | block) was created

No accounts ending wit the string "Greyjoy" in two months, then two in a row? Maybe I'm being paranoid, but I think we might want to keep an eye on these two.

Agreed. I was just coming here to comment on this. BalonGreyjoy had a page in the moderation queue which I have rejected; the Usual Suspects are cc'ed on my message to him why, and in going through Recent Changes I saw the other name.

I approved Balon's edit to a character page because it did not match with TVT's version of the character page, should still be monitored though.

Quoting myself from Talk:Qipao

Quote:Should we switch from a copyright image to a PD or CC image? (I think the answer to that one's a no-brainer: of course we should when we have the option. But we don't actually say that in any of our policies.)

Before I take that to the ATT Forums for all of the Tropers to discuss a proposed new policy, I'd like to know: do any of the mods disagree?

I thought it already was, and if not; was acting on that basis.

BeesFan12 has been doing some good work, and have advised him on his latest new article to move some of the examples on a franchise/first-work page onto his/her/it new page; I hope they follow the advice.
RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXII
We have a major hole in our descriptions.

"Live-Action TV" redirects to "Category:Live-Action TV".

"Category:Live-Action TV" has the content "Main article: Live-Action TV".

Somebody needs to write a description of Live-Action TV -- preferably not simply copied from "Category:Television" because that description includes animated TV.

I'm looking at Category:Live-Action TV by decade ...

When did we decide to put the sidebar material into a tab? It isn't so important that it warrants a tab of its own - it's less-important sidebar material and belongs in a sidebar.

Did we have a discussion to change this?

Geth meant well but the sidebar in this instance was fine as is.

What is our actual policy on video files and how to add them?

To the best of my knowledge we've never established one.  I suspect most of the videos currently on pages -- other than possibly source pages populated by Rob -- are ones I put there.  While I'm sure there are some, to the best of my recollection I have never seen another use embed a video since the functionality became available to us.

Yeah, aside from source pages for stuff in the public domain or otherwise resharable under a permissive license, it's not something I've even deigned to mess with. An actual policy on best practices might not hurt.
RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXII
Well, I thought I had a draft policy proposal regarding pictures ready to go... May as well add moving pictures to the draft.

What do we want to put in it?

Changing topics... Sorting the examples on Internet Backdraft/Real Life/Politics cost me a SAN point or two. And it's outdated, at least as far as North American politics are concerned. Does anybody here actually follow discussion of US politics and have time to bring the "Politics of the United States of America" section of that page up to date? (I'm not so much of an optimist to think we'll find somebody like that for Canadian politics.)

And I only stumbled across that mess of a page because I was changing pages named "foo/Live Action TV" to "foo/Live-Action TV". Wiki walking will ruin your life.

Due to our limited ability to respond to DMCA requests, any "fair use" usage of copyrighted videos need to be pre-vetted with staff unless possibly staff yourself? PD/CC videos can naturally be added without vetting, respecting current moderation log rules.

Per politics, I know that POTUS 45 still has a cleanup tag on it; I'm concerned whether we will ever be up to date with a policy that isn't just wholesale nicking off WP. Which itself would likely be disputed as politically biased depending on the user.
RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXII
Regarding videos, we need to see what YouTube's general policy on embedding is. They make it so very easy, and I see it in so many commercial contexts, I would think their terms are generous and would certainly encompass our use.

Where is our new-users' FAQ? I have an entry for it:

Quote:== My edits are being rejected because of spelling mistakes! What can I do? ==
Proofreading your work before submitting it will help.
* If you prefer UK spelling, please look up your words in the [https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/ Cambridge Dictionary].<ref>The Cambridge Dictionary is available online at no charge, which is why ATT recommends it instead of the Oxford English Dictionary.</ref>
* If you prefer US spelling, please look up your words in the [https://www.merriam-webster.com/ Merriam-Webster Dictionary].
Either way, use the entries in your dictionary of choice to correct your own work before saving your changes, replacing misspelled words (and words that didn't mean what you thought they meant) with the correct words.

This is a good idea Rob. In fact, I have another thing we should add, namely a list of links to good (and preferably FOSS, since it is free and usually cross-platform) spell checkers (like Grammarly), word processors (like (LibreOffice) and other tools that would be useful for proofreading and polishing up potential edits before they are submitted to ATT.
RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXII
Videos work in infoboxes.

Not seamlessly - you can see the orphan code - but they fit.
