FFN stuffed up again?
07-31-2006, 01:26 AM
I didn't notice until today, when I wanted to go and make archives of the many, amny bookmarked fics from FanFiction.net, because the author profile pages don't display properly on my PSP anyway, but even on the desktop machine, in Safari and IE both all I can see is the C2 panel below the author's profile, not their fics, friends, or reccomendations. Is anyone else having this problem? Has it been that way for long? Fic listings from C2s or fandom listings are fine, but that doesn't help when all my bookmarks are to profile pages...

ETA: Firefox and Camino don't even get the profile page, just an FFN server error message - even though I loaded it again in between each attempt in both IE and Safari! SERVO: Loook *deeeeply* into my eyes... Tell me, what do you see?

I first noticed a problem Friday.
I keep getting the same three basic errors "page not found", "we are experiencing more traffic than expected" and "an error has occured please contact".
It's happening with new stories and old stories even the home page is consistantly popping up all three error messages.
Both Firefox and Netscape return the same type of error messages.

It's not just browesers, most of their servers are unreachable by ping too. But it sometimes works, it doesn't seem brower dependent it seems server dependent since appreently they have more than one server (load balancing I guess, but one of the servers doesn't seem to wokr)

That... doesn't sound like the same thing, actually. I can get any story I've tried if I have a link to a chapter, and I can get the profile and C2 parts of the author page, I just can't get it to display the list of stories - the search page is the same way, it says how many results were foud but doesn't actually show the stories. Maybe they're "upgrading" their scripts again? It's the kind of result I'd expect if I had javascript turned off, since it's scripted functions that aren't working, but I already checked that as the most obvious failiure point, and it's definately turned on.

I get errors semi relbaly with certain stories and or chapters, but not others. Chapeter 1 of Sue me is unreachable, and so is the latest chapeter of brown coat green eyes, but the rest of the respective stories ussually show up. And the fics that give me issues are different between my work comp and home comp.

I ran into this about half the times I tried to go there, over the weekend -- which admittedly wasn't that much, but still...

Well they seem to have fiction down

It's a fiction that they actually have anything to read.
This and two other errors is about all the reading material I been getting from fanFICTION.net since last weekend.

A couple of things I've noticed:
1) Firefox 1.5.0.3 under Linux (Ubuntu 6.0.6) works.
2) Firefox 1.5.0.5/6 under Windows XP do not work.
3) IE 6.0.29 under Windows XP works.
From looking at the release dates, it appears to have started (for me) when Firefox 1.5.0.5 was released. I'll have to roll-back to 1.5.0.4 and see if that fixes it.

I did some more research. What I've found, on my machine (Windows XP Home), is that if NoScript 1.1.4.1 is installed then I can get the errors to occur. FFN works before and after installation NoScript unless I clear the cookies. Once I clear cookies then, if NoScript is installed, I start getting the errors; if NoScript is not installed then there are no errors. Once I uninstall NoScript I need to get a valid page from FFN and then every page works.

One trick to use:
If you're having problem going to chapters try adding a bunch of zeros before the chapter number. Ie if the chapter is number 1 try adding going to /0000000000000000000001/ instead of /1/

fiction of fanfics

I've tried playing with script setting and cookie setting in Netscape, Firefox and IE as much as I dare and it didn't seem to make a difference in error messages so I run them back up to very secure levels.
I just tried the '0' trick and it worked in netscape and firefox's previous version. Haven't tried it in the lastest updated version of Firefox that came out in the last few days.
Another trick that works on rare occasion is starting with chapter one and passing through each chapter to the last one.
