hmm, assuming your going with spines/regen scrapper...

Cloe Sen Uf

Phonetic mangling of: close enough

To play off of the 'Close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades'

But that may be one two many referential jumps for your tastes.

I don't think he's a City of Heroes character, at least going by the V&V reference.
Examining the Wikipedia pages on horseshoe crabs gives me some ideas - Living Fossil or some derivative of Xiphosura or Limulidae would work.

Given that modified biology to have copper based blood and cure his 'sickly 98 pound weakling with two or three blood related disorders' natural condition is the basis of his origin story, I might end up going with Blueblood. He's supposed to have wealth in the background, enough that his folks resorted to illegal experiments by an AIM-like criminal organization when normal treatments failed. They of course were in it for the military applications and a bobbled doublecross leads to the genre standard loss

of all details on the proceedure, parental death leaving the newly empowered individual with an axe to grind againt the evil organization and freedom to spend their time doing so, and training montage as he gets in shape before meeting Sandcastle (female Marvel Sandman), The Pelican (He has pelikinesis, flight, and a dimensional pocket), Kite (flyer/electric blaster), and Life Guard (healer/wicca chick) and forming the Lifesavers (which they admit is lame but gets the important point across.) I still think

that the crab guy needs a better name, though - up untill the team formed Pelican was going by Lockerman and wearing a mask that looked like the vents on the door of one, so it's not as if it couldn't happen later, but I'd rather have it set up from the beginning.

Oh, and Sandcastle has water-control powers also, more a Sandman/Hydroman mix I guess.

- dNN, the tide is coming up on my SANcastle...

edit for pun

Build him an outfit out of car parts, and call him The Hermit.

I actually rather like the Blueblood - it's kind of sideways in a nifty "villain who has only hear the name will totally be preparing for the wrong thing" sort of way.

If he started out a little lower on the social ladder, Urchin might be appropriate as well.

if he had some sort of a bovine-themed strength-and-earth-powers friend to hang out with, they could make a go at Surf and Turf.

"Lucky" ?

Well, he's a horseshoe.

If it'd been any other sort of crab, Deadliest Catch jokes would've been mandatory.

Different character. My Madkow is a huge male tanker. The Rev's Mad Cow is a female brute. (And both are from before both the "any archectype in either City" change and the alignment system, so they're a hero and a villain respectively.)

Ancient Spirits of Eeevil! Hear my cry, and heed my command! By the power of the Dark Eternal, RAISE THREAD!

So, new character, vaguely computer themed (female) speedster called Digital Zoom, needs a civvy name. I started calling her DiZ as shorthand, which (minus interCaps) turns out to be a valid Hebrew girl's name, meaning "joyful" or "bringer of joy" which fits well enough, but for surnames I'm waffling between the following:

Spitznogel - "sharp nail" - loose connection via speedster quick thinking, fun to say
Reuter - "dweller in a clearing" - obvious networking connection (ha!)
Zingel - "defensive wall" - less blatant data security connection

Any preferences or alternate suggestions? The character is something of a reverse-Kevin-Flynn security routine diverted to a comic-book-science digitizer output to get her out of the way during a cyberattack, so this would be more likely to be the name of or suggested by her meatspace contact, so the situation more likely something like "Dr. Spitznogel and his niece, Diz Reuter" or some similar combination, possibly sharing the surname.

"Diz Reuter" has the added bonus of sounding like somebody who doesn't know German trying to figure out the German word for 'router'.

I like Reuter. Another connection is that you can say that her civvie job is a photographer for Reuters. Wink

I like Diz Reuter, but if you're open to alternatives, how about Diz Spiegel? 'spiegel' is mirror, or possibly glass - which has, broadly, a logical link to her origin without being too on-the-nose. Also the name of a prominent German news magazine. And a Cowboy Bebop reference.

Her civ "job" is as an actor - she doesn't have much in the way of basic needs, just electricity really, so the take from an amateur theatre troupe's one-weekend-a-month productions (with a few other days for rehearsals) and her minor shape-shifting secondary power that lets them save on costumes and so on for any number of characters as long as they're not on stage at the same time is enough to cover the cost of letting her stay in one of the others' loft while leaving lots of time open for heroing. Dr. Whatever is a semi-retired local gadgeteer type, who could still suit up and step in if she went villain but is mostly around as a contact and possible source for supergadgets for her and the rest of the (theoretical, don't actually have a group to play Champs) party. He built the energy batons she uses, for example - high-normal strength and superspeed make even pulled punches on the iffy side against normals, so she uses the stun-only weapons until a fight gets serious.

Back to names, Spiegel isn't bad either - it doesn't have to be in German, for that matter, it's just where the search engine landed when I looked for Jewish surnames to go with the nickname turning out to be a valid Hebrew name-word. With Sabaton singing about the Warsaw Uprising on my jukebox program, I'm strongly considering looking up something Polish and inserting some background hooks to lead any time-travel shenanigans she may get involved in that way, for instance.
