A How To Train Your Dragon Alternate-History fanfic with a simple premise: Take the first How To Train Your Dragon film as canon… and then set that, gently, in the historical 1040s. And then stand back and watch the fireworks.

I think I'm also spotting some elements from the TV cartoon.  However, I only watched three episodes of that as the focus characters (the young dragonriders) were written with characterization I found annoying.

Yes; the author says "Only the first movie is canon as far as the fic
is concerned; the rest (TV series, second movie, etc), are a tasty
buffet line of ideas to be used, or not, as needed."

So, reading Heretical Edge sent me off to another Wordpress blog, The Gods are Bastards , and I wanted to recommend it. Set in a fantasy world that has reached its Industrial Age, the story follows a group of students attending a legendary university, run by the infamous elven archmage, Arachne Tellwyrn. Not a Steampunk setting, but actual industrialized magic, similar to the Eberron setting for D&D. The setting contains elements of the Wild West, along with a number of standard fantasy tropes, which proceeds to investigate and both subvert and reinforce. (One of the students is a paladin, for example.) Plenty of humor, action, and just a little bit of horror. And a strange twist that's revealed around Chapter 11. Well, maybe not strange, per se, as I've seen the trope in previous stories, but it's a good version of the trope, and it's an equally good answer for a number of the whys and wherefores of the cosmology of the setting. Anyway, Eb-Bob sez, "Check it out."

I just finished all the extant chapters for this fic. It is excellent and I will be following it hereafter.

Huh. I've been reading this one since the beginning, and digging back through the thread, it seems I never got around to posting it. Each Star Is A Point Of Light , a fantastic Mass Effect/Destiny fusion that is more than willing to break from the stations of canon and provide worldbuilding at the same time.

So I have two fics, both Persona Crossovers.
The first of these is Stacked Deck , (Or, Collin Wallis vs Single Parenting).  Another Worm crossover, this introduces Yu Narukami into Brockton Bay as Armsmaster's Sort-of nephew.

The second, Fool Me Twice , is a High School DxD crossover, with a (still totally human) Issei as the Wild Card.  This has more similarities to P5, theme wise (secret worlds created by runaway desire), though phantom thief, Issei is not.

I don't know if it has been mentioned around here before, but I've recently discovered and enjoyed The Vasto of Whitehttp://www.fanfiction.net/s/11589719/1 ... o-of-White
Fate / Bleach crossover. Shirou somehow ends up as a hollow in Hueco Mundo, but still has his drive to protect and ALL THE SWORDS. He ends up creating an area of relative peace where the hollows don't have to prey each other and are prevented from doing so.

Admittedly, the story so far (17 chapters) has mostly been Shirou curb-stomping everything. Much of the entertainment lies in other characters reacting to him. Whether it remains entertaining depends on whether Shirou finally starts getting some challenges and serious threats (now that the wider world is aware of him) or maybe some problems he can't solve by throwing swords at them.

It's there, I just stuck it to the top of the forum a moment ago.
Be aware that it is still about a month old; I have updated info for it scraped two days ago, but I'm not going to restore that to the new forums until I get all the older stuff transferred over.

Ever heard of a Blind Friend Insert? It's like a self insert but instead you insert a friend who's never seen the work their being inserted into so you can get metaknowledge free reactions.
So I'm recommending Someone New - A Muv-Luv FI. The plan is to run a poor bastard through all three Muv - Luv games (Extra, Unlimited and Alternative) and is currently in the middle of Unlimited. Do note that if you intend to post in the thread it's very important to avoid posting any spoilers for Muv - Luv and also Fate/Stay Night and Arcanum, as the authors are also doing BFI for those as well.

Florin, it might interest you that Scott Johnson and Scott Jamison did something like that almost 20 years ago in their story Ma Vie et Roses --it's a Revolutionary Girl Utena fic, and one of the authors, who was genuinely unfamiliar with the series at the time, wrote the actions of a pseudo-insert avatar while the other wrote the rest of the fic around him. Sadly incomplete but what there is of it is huge and really worth the read.

I think I recall reading that years back. In fact, a quick check of my HD shows I still have a copy of it kicking around! Might have to do a reread of it sometime soon.

I only just got around to looking at this one and all I can say is, "Medic! Someone get a medic, the Stations of Canon need a medic!" Canon was folded and mutilated right out of the gate and by the eighth chapter there's absolutely no going back. (And barely any Dumbledor page time so no idea what take on him this story has yet)

Edit: Oh. And there's the end of the story. Well... Wait, fanfic are actually allowed to reach their ends instead of just getting further and further between new chapters? :p

Will the transhumanist future have catgirls? Does Japan still exist? Well, there is your answer.
