According to this article, the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology has a team working on a "power assist robot suit" for agricultural workers. According to the article, they expect the suit to be in use by 2012.

The really scary thing is that based on the tiny picture on the first link, the prototype, aside from the power supply, looks to be compact enough that adding armor to it shouldn't hamper it's mobility by much...
