For those who don't have a handheld MP3 player yet...

... Wal-Mart in my area is offering a ZVUE MP3 player with battery, earbuds, etc. for $40, regular price. Currently they're half off. It claims 512MB onthe box, but in reality is a 1GB player. Wal-Mart is such a national chain that I imagine the same sale is going on elsewhere.

I like it. Figured I'd share, since I'm one of those who can never afford an iPod. This thing is pretty cool and at $20 I couldn't resist (but I
would've paid the $40, for that matter.)

I like ya, spud, and I respect you (totally different things), but I gotta weigh in on the far opposite side of this issue - buy an actual iPod.
superior grade hardware, superior grade support software, superior acessories, (superior price), well built tie-in music store with superior availability.

Y'know, Ep, I used to agree with you on the whole 'avoid WalMart, they're evil!' thing. Not saying that's necessarily your stance, butwhen someone spouts off about avoiding WalMart for personal moral reasons, that's usually it.

But then I ran into the hard realities of living life on a tighter budget than before. Rising fuel costs, rising food costs, rising costs for everything from
clothes to electronics... and my salary isn't rising fast enough to keep up with them. Oh, I'm not going to lose my house or anything -- I wasn't
stupid -- but my disposable income has vanished.

So my choice boiled down to this: I could feel smug and morally superior and not feed my family, or, I could buckle and swallow my pride and go shop for the
things I need at Walmart where prices are still reasonable.

If you don't have to make that choice, good! I still don't like having made it myself.

To head off the inevitable rebuttal about "if things are that tight, why are you buying crap you don't need": the money for this MP3 player came
from me mowing lawns on the weekend. That's how I make my play money these days, and if things don't look up soon, that'll be how I start making
my bills. Re: Walmart vs other places: round here, there really aren't any other options for low-cost goods.

Yeah, I feel dirty, but I can live with that.

Just about every store around here seems to have a few 1 gig players for $20 regular price.
(If you hit the right Kmart, you might be able to find one for $30 that has microSD for expansion and a built-in FM tuner as well. An AM tuner would be better.
 -.- )

And personally, I avoid WalMart because they've done things in my actual area that annoy me. '.'

Becuase I only really listen to AM radio. '.'
The expansion thing really ends up being more of a philosophical issue for me, since I don't actualy have enough music to fill up the built in storage of
the player I got... But it's also convenient as a memory card reader for my camera. '.'

My cellphone is, too, but its one of those fancy-schmancy RAZR ones... which, among other annoyances, means that it doesn't HAVE any sort of headphone
jack. You got Bluetooth, and you got a USB port. That's it.

Work pays for it, so I can't really complain, but yeah... I was all like "hey cool, my phone can play MP3s!"

I've seen some USB headsets, but I don't know about headphones...
Bluetooth headsets have the same issue. And cost more. Though I've got one that I use with my computer for those times when I want to hear the computer and
neither want anyone else to have to listen nor want to be on a short tether.

Motorola makes a few Bluetooth headphones, that apparently function as headsets. Because of that they've made a iPod Bluetooth adaptor, which plugs intothe ipod connector. Ya then sync up ya phone and the 'phones to the adaptor, so that if ya get a call while listening to some tunes, the song pauses and
 the yakking begins.
