Yet Another Tech Help Request Post

My father recently converted to Macs, but has several windows games that he likes to play.

We've been toying with Paralells Desktop since it's the simplest install, and it seems to work mostly-ok.

But we have one problem: It doesn't seem to be able to pass joystick input to the Windows programs.

We have a 2006 iMac with the latest OSX (Tiger?), an a Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2 USB joystick. OSX recognizes the joystick without a problem, but none
of the Windows programs running under Paralells seems to be able to detect it.

Any suggestions?

Only thing I could find on first look - I'm not a mac guy.

Seems Parallels doesn't speak async IO over USB - and may not speak async IO at all.

My biggest shock, however, was finding no 'supported hardware' list..

Might have to look at Boot Camp.

Seems to me that the 'USB Overdrive' linked to there has yet to come out with reliable 10.5.2 update, reading through the user comments...

If I could be there and look around in the settings, I might be able to come up with a more definite idea. I'm no more a Mac gal than Wire is a Mac guy, so
I don't really know what to say. On the first thought, you might try and look under the Joystick controller, and see if you can have the Mac OS disconnect
from the Joystick with out actually unplugging if from the computer. Trying to run one OS off another, as with this Parallel, could cause recognition problems
with external devices. I would imagine this is because your Mac running OSX sees the Joystick and accepts it and then it is no longer available to the rest of
the system, and the Parallel onto Windows can't detect anything.

Once again, I don't really know Macs so I can't really help much, without getting down to it and fiddling with the computer. Best of luck to you.

Not much of a mac person either but from the Parallels FAQ:

Parallels Desktop isn't recognizing my USB device.

You may be on an older build of Parallels Desktop for Mac. The most recent build of Parallels Desktop for Mac, build 3188, supports almost all USB 2.0 devices.

* Parallels Tools must be installed to activate the USB ports within Windows.

* In Parallels Configuration Editor, select USB Controller.

* Verify that the Enabled check box is selected for both Device Status and Connections Options. This allows Windows to automatically recognize any USB devices
connected to your Mac when Windows starts.

If Windows still didn't recognize your USB device:

* Click on Devices on the Parallels menu bar.

* Select USB and click on the device you want.

* Return to Parallels Configuration Editor.

* Click USB Controller.

* Click the device you want, and verify that the Enabled check box is selected.

Note: Windows controls devices with the Enabled check box selected. Mac OS C controls devices whose Enabled check box is not selected.

Thanks.

I checked with Dad, and it's actually Crossover - ie, WINE - that he's using, not Paralells.

Which means things are a bit more and less complicated.

Ah that makes things easier, I know wine. Unfortunately last I checked Wine only had joystick support under linux.

A quick check of the documentation makes me doubt that has changed, However I heard that some mac users have gotten it working, but I don't know how.
You might want to try the crossover forums.
