Goodbye Central Park Media
Goodbye Central Park Media

Quote: The Crain's New York Business news source reports that the
anime and manga distributor Central Park Media
(CPM) filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and has closed its doors as of Monday. According to Crain's, the company owes US$1.2 million to creditors. The
company has not been active in releasing new titles in the past 12 months.

CPM and its Software Sculptors, U.S. Manga Corps, and Anime 18 labels were once the North American homes of such prominent works as
Grave of the Fireflies, Utena, Mobile Police Patlabor, Record of Lodoss War, Slayers, Night on the Galactic Railroad, Project A-Ko, Dominion Tank Police, Descendants of Darkness, Demon City Shinjuku, Urotsukidoji, and La Blue Girl. It later branched out into the book publishing field by releasing
Comic Party, Record of Lodoss
War, Slayers, and other titles under the CPM Manga imprint. It sponsored the Big Apple Anime Fest earlier this
decade.

Companies that file for bankruptcy under Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code in the United States will face liquidation - unlike Chapter 11 and 13
bankruptcies which still allow companies to restructure and continue to operate.

CPM's former management did not respond to ANN's request for comment.

My first reaction: CPM was still in business?

My second reaction: They've got a fair number of licences that were negotiated back in the old days, likely without end dates on them. Somebody could pick
up a fair-sized back catalog by buying them...

My first reaction is good riddance, their DVD menu's where terrible, and their summaries worse, at least for gall force. IIRC the A-ko DVD menus where also
bad but not as nerve grinding as the ones in gall force. Unfortunatly most of my stuff is elsewhere so I can't check.

As I recall, they're also the licensees for Utena, and those were reasonably well-designed DVDs.

Didn't they also do Rayearth, too?

Yeah. Unfortunately, Utena's been out of print for awhile, and is currently INSANELY expensive to pick up (via Amazon or ebay). Hopefully someone else will
rerelease it.

I swear, that's the only reason I don't actually own that series aside from fansubs. Individual volumes run like, what, in the 30-40 range
right now? If someone re-releases some kind of "Master Collection" or whatever new bells and whistles version you can get at a reasonable cost,
I'd be all over that like a hot sammich.

More to the point, though, I dunno how many of these licenses they still hold. The most recent remastered collections of Slayers, NEXT, and TRY were released
under Funimation, who also has the license for Revolution and Evolution-R.
