A good thought, Rob, and one I should act on after Christmas (probably going to be way too busy before to even try). Thanks for the suggestion.

Actually, it was some outfit trying to set up a massive Net-trawling operation designed to catch pedophiles. Good goal, but in the article about them I read, all the people involved come off as scary-obsessed and not too concerned about things like due process and individual rights.

		Ah.
Yes, I can see why it might not be a good idea to apply to work with folks who appear to think some people don't deserve the same rights as everyone else.

Found another of those impossible experience demands: Quote:10+ years experience with VB.NET
Given that anything .NET 1.0 first appeared in 2002, I suspect this will be a difficult requirement to meet for at least another 2-3 years.

Probably some guy in HR who put that one together. The department manager tells them, "We need someone with advanced knowledge of .NET methodology. VB.NETprimarily."

So... the HR guy looks at other jobs with "advanced knowledge" on them, and slaps 10+ years on the front. He hasn't a clue what it means, he just
 assumes it's okay.

The trick is getting past the idiot barrier to the person who has the real need. Maybe if you have concurrent project experience, which if added sequentially
equals more than ten years, that would pass the idiot barrier?

Or possibly a mention of experience with VB.NET "since its first introduction", or something along those lines, might manage to get past.

About half an hour ago I finished a phone interview with an HR person from a major consulting firm that shall for the moment remain nameless. It ran about 15minutes longer than planned, and I think I seriously impressed her. She told me she's sending me on to the next stage of the interview process (stage 2 of
4, only the last of which is a face-to-face interview), and told me the entire cycle of interviews normally takes about 2-1/2 weeks. Wish me luck, folks; the
next level is the one where my piecemeal, self-taught programming skills may sink me by being insufficient to the task.

So far, no word back from the consulting firm. The HR person told me last week they were working out precisely what they wanted of the person in the positionand that they'd be back in touch with me on Monday, but it's already Wednesday and no word.

In the mean time, though, one of my other applications has come through, and I have an in-person interview on Tuesday the 26th.

Further developments: In the last half hour a different recruiter has contacted me, and my resume/application is now going to be submitted for a vice president position at a major investment bank which shall for the moment remain nameless -- but which will pay me a fair bit more than I was making at Best. I have been assured that this is not a Hail Mary pass, but that I in fact closely fit said firm's ideal profile for a VP (which is, oddly, not necessarily a management position). So I am being restrainedly excited about this opportunity.-- Bob
